We thought it would be nice for our patients to get to know some of the Gaskell Avenue Dental Practice staff members a little bit better. To kick things off here’s a little bit about Amanda Whittaker, one of our dental nurses, in her own words…

“I have been a dental nurse at Gaskell Avenue for 16 years and I absolutely love it! In fact, my mum used to work here and when the job came up I jumped at the chance, because I knew how much she enjoyed working here. There’s a real family feeling among the team, we all look out for each other and the owners treat us really well, which is lovely.

I had originally started training to be a midwife but I was married and had my first child when I was 20 years old, and the midwifery course turned out to be too much pressure with a newborn baby. I have since had two more children and working at Gaskell Avenue is perfect for me with a busy family life.

I am also the qualified sedation nurse at the dental practice, having undertaken six months of training at Liverpool Dental Hospital. This means I work alongside the oral surgeon at Gaskell Avenue once a month, observing the patients who are under sedation while he is carrying out surgery and making him aware of any problems. I also see the patients during the pre-op stage, taking medical history and discussing any concerns they may have. After surgery, I am on hand to provide post-operative care instructions to both the patient and their escort.

My top tips for patients would be to maintain their oral health with regular check ups. It sounds simple but it is so important! If you are anxious about visiting the dentist please don’t let this be a barrier, there are plenty of ways in which we can help you overcome this if you are open with your dentist about how you feel.

Outside of work I volunteer on Monday evenings as a first responder for the North West Ambulance Service, which I love. I am often one of the first people on the scene when someone is in a critical or life threatening condition, such as a cardiac arrest, meaning that I am there quickly to provide defibrillation or CPR as needed. I found out about the post on Facebook and immediately applied because I thought it would be interesting. I was surprised at how difficult the recruitment process was, there were lots of application forms to fill in and interviews to attend. However, now I am in the role I can understand why, there are certain types of people you would want with you, in your home, during an emergency situation and the recruitment process ensures they only select the right people for the job.

The rest of my time is spent with my family. My three children – 15-year-old James, 11-year-old Ben, and 8-year-old Ruby – keep me very busy, but if I do get some spare time I like to spend it decorating cakes. There’s never a dull moment in my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way!”
