Teaching good practices during your children’s early years can often mean they will adopt great habits that will last a lifetime. Impeccable manners, excellent behaviour, healthy food choices, and top notch hygiene are all examples of essential life skills that children can begin to learn from a young age. This is why at Gaskell Avenue Dental Practice in Knutsford, Cheshire, we always advocate bringing little ones in to the practice to get them used to the sights and smells of a dental environment.

Not only does an early introduction help to make the dental practice a known and comfortable place, thus avoiding any associated fear, it also allows us to develop an interest in oral health, instilling excellent habits that will be beneficial throughout their life. However, there are also things that you can do at home to help make toothbrushing a fun time rather than a chore (even the best of us have to fight the tooth brushing battle every night!)…

Make toothbrushing fun

If kids find something fun there will be no stopping them, so if you can make toothbrush time something to look forward to there’ll be no turning back! The goal is to get them brushing for two minutes, twice a day, so if you can play a favourite song or make up a dance together that lasts two minutes this should help make the time go smoothly. We suggest first thing in the morning and just before bed as the best times for brushing.

Don’t forget about flossing, too! As soon as you notice your children have teeth that touch, that’s the time to start introducing flossing to their daily tooth care regime. As with anything, the earlier you instill this habit, the more likely they are to carry it on.
