Lets get to know each other

At Gaskell Avenue Dental Care, your journey with us will start with a dental examination for new patients. This gives you the chance to get to know our practice and dental team a little bit better and ask us any questions you may have about our services, or concerns you might have with your teeth and gums. It also gives us the chance to meet you and take a first look at your mouth to assess your oral health. This allows us to determine whether there are any problems that may need addressing, and how soon. Our primary concern is your dental health and well being, so you can rest assured that we will always provide you with the best service for you and your teeth.

Following on from this, we will advise how often we recommend having your regular dental check ups and hygienist appointments. Our dental check up covers tooth and gum health and also provides screening for conditions affecting the health of all of the mouth, so keeping up with these as often as we recommend can help to keep problems at bay. Our hygienists work with our dentists to provide preventive care that includes cleaning, maintenance and treatments for gum conditions. These hygiene therapy appointments are just as important as your check ups for maintaining good overall oral health.

Your regular dental examinations and hygiene appointments are important for keeping on top of your oral health in order to prevent problems in the future, or at least catch them before they become expensive to resolve! These appointments also include tips on brushing between teeth cleaning and flossing techniques to ensure you are making the most of your daily regime and reaching all of those tricky spots where plaque may be building up, as well as diet and smoking advice if requested.

Prevention

Regular check-ups

Our dental check-up covers tooth and gum health with screening for conditions affecting the health of the mouth. The hygienists work to the prescription of the dentists to provide dental health advice and preventative care, including regular cleaning, maintenance and treatments for gum disease. We can also guide you in choosing the best mouth care products to keep your teeth and gums healthy, and instruct you in their use.

Brushing

It doesn’t matter what age or state of health – we all need to be shown how to care for our teeth and prevent dental disease.

For example – don’t brush for at least one hour after a fruit juice breakfast, as this will cause much more erosion of teeth. Using the incorrect type of brush, and poor brushing technique can cause irreversible damage to both teeth and gums.

Diet

Conflicting advice leads to confusion about what we should eat. Our dentists and hygienists can provide advice on diet appropriate to individual age, medical health and appetite. Snacking is less healthy than eating well at separated meal times.

Grinding

Stress and muscle tension can cause tooth damage and/or muscle pain so stress management and bite position is important in dental prevention. Sleep and anti-snoring appliances are appropriate for some patients.

Children

Childrens’ dental development is monitored carefully at appropriately spaced check-up appointments. Preventative care and treatments, such as fluoride application, sealants and dietary advice, are our first-line approach in caring for children.
